Community

The Town of Inverness is an unincorporated community within Marin County. Inverness is located on the southwest shore of Tomales Bay 3.5 miles northwest of Point Reyes Station north of San Francisco, at an elevation of 43 feet. It was settled in the 1890’s and is named after Inverness in Scotland.  In the 2020 census, the population was 1,470. Inverness Park is another unincorporated community within Marin County that is counted as part of the Inverness census-designated place, but residents and businesses in Inverness Park receive water services from North Marin Water District rather than Inverness Public Utility District.

Local government consists only of the Inverness Public Utility District providing fire protection and water services. Other government services are provided by either Marin County (e.g. Sherriff, Public Works, Building Permits, etc.), or private entities (e.g. Recology, PG&E, etc.).

Community organizing is provided largely by the Inverness Association  to "protect and advance the rights and interests of residents of the Inverness area." The Association owns and maintains three small local parks, a series of foot bridges and trails, and The Gables, home of the Inverness Library which is a branch of the Marin County Free Library system, and the archives of the Jack Mason Museum of West Marin History. The Inverness Association relies on volunteers and donations for its work.

Other local community groups include the Inverness Yacht Club and the Inverness Tennis Club
